Novel therapeutic target for neurodegenerative disease
Date Posted: 10/16/2018 Effective treatment is needed for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Niemann-Pick disease, which affect the central nervous system. A team of researchers have found a promising molecular player that could be exploited as a therapeutic target for these diseases. This molecule, Sphingosine kinase 1 or SphK1 controls the levels of sphingosine in cells by converting it to sphingosine-1-phosphate or S1P. Accumulation of sphingosine in nerve cells or neurons, an event that occurs when SphK1 activity is compromised, results in the disruption of normal autophagy or self-destruction.
